American Beach Edition 1.0

Did you know one woman’s passion helped save American Beach?

Cue “The Beach Lady” — MaVynee Betsch — who spent her life preserving the rich history and fragile beauty of this special shoreline. With her signature 7-foot ponytail and endless love for the land, she became the heartbeat of American Beach, ensuring its stories would live on for generations.

American Beach was originally founded in 1935 by Abraham Lincoln Lewis — Florida’s first Black millionaire — so that African American families could ‘relax and enjoy the sunshine, surf, and sand of Florida’s coast.’ Every wave here carries the rhythm of that vision.

The signature pinkish hue of American Beach’s sand comes from crushed coquina and shell fragments — a small detail that makes this shoreline stand out from many others along the Atlantic.
